Pet Orthopedic Surgery

Heartlake Veterinary Hospital offers a wide range of surgical services for pets, including pet orthopedic surgery.

Orthopedic Surgery at Heart Lake Veterinary Hospital

  1. Cruciate Ligament Repair (ACL Surgery):
    • For dogs, the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is common, often leading to instability and pain in the knee (stifle). Surgery, such as Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) or Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA), is typically performed
  2. Hip Dysplasia Surgery:
    • In dogs, particularly large breeds, hip dysplasia can cause arthritis and pain. Surgical options include Total Hip Replacement (THR), Femoral Head and Neck Excision (FHO), or Double Pelvic Osteotomy (DPO).
  3. Fracture Repair:
    • Broken bones due to trauma may require surgical intervention. This can involve plating, pinning, or external fixation, depending on the location and complexity of the fracture.
  4. Patellar Luxation Surgery:
    • A condition where the kneecap (patella) dislocates. Surgery may involve realigning the patella or deepening the groove that holds it in place.
  5. Arthroscopy:
    • Minimally invasive surgery used to examine or treat joint problems, such as removing cartilage or bone fragments in conditions like elbow or shoulder dysplasia.
  6. Spinal Surgery:
    • For conditions like intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), spinal instability, or fractures, surgery may involve decompression or stabilization procedures to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
  7. Osteotomy:
    • In cases of limb deformities or joint issues, an osteotomy may be performed to correct the alignment of bones.
  8. Elbow Dysplasia Surgery:
    • Common in larger breeds of dogs, surgery may involve fragment removal, joint stabilization, or the correction of malformation.
  9. Amputation:
    • In cases of severe injury, infection, or cancer, amputation of a limb may be necessary.
  10. Joint Stabilization for Luxation:
    • Surgical stabilization for conditions like hip or shoulder luxation, where the joint is dislocated.

These surgeries are aimed at relieving pain, restoring function, and improving quality of life for pets with orthopedic conditions. Many of these surgeries can be performed at our hospital by a qualified orthopedic surgeon that comes in just for your pet’s surgery. In some cases, we may need to facilitate a referral to a specialty hospital for complex orthopedic surgeries. For more information call us today! 905-840-9961.
