Pet Dentistry

Does your dog’s breath smell? When is the last time you brushed your dog’s teeth? Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions we see in dogs and cats. At Heart Lake Veterinary Hospital, we believe firmly that a healthy mouth contributes to overall improved health.

At every exam, our dedicated veterinarians take a look into your pet’s mouth to check for tartar accumulation, gingivitis, fractured or diseased teeth and unusual growths.

We will often recommend a prophylactic dental cleaning just like when you go to your dentist, to keep your pet’s teeth pearly white and improve the smell of their breath. This will also help prevent gingivitis, which if left untreated, progresses to dental disease and tooth loss as the gums recede and roots are exposed.

We have a dedicated dental suite at our hospital where we take full mouth x-rays to look for disease above the gumline, perform a full dental cleaning using a state-of- the- art ultrasonic scaler and polisher and if needed our skilled doctors can extract decayed or damaged teeth and suture the sockets closed.

We send every patient home with a dental report card and a home care plan to keep their teeth clean for as long as possible after their professional cleaning.

Veterinary Dentistry also known as a COHAT (comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment) is much more involved than having a groomer chip off tartar from your pet’s teeth. A COHAT is like a visit to your own dentist for annual full mouth x-rays, cleanings and fillings. In the case of dogs and cats where fillings are not practical, extractions are necessary. Anesthetic free cleanings are considered to be purely cosmetic as it does nothing to address underlying dental disease which may be causing your pet pain and discomfort. Follow our patient “Mindy” through her COHAT to see how it is done from start to glowing finish!
